Featured Friday: $7 on the 7th

It seems these days, everywhere you turn there is a cause...

"Help Cure Cancer"

"Save the Whales"

"March of Dimes"

"Autism"

"Breast Cancer"

Each and every cause we can all roll off our tongues faster than we can our siblings names, was started and continues today because somehow, sometime, somewhere it affected someone personally and on a deep level.

With this, some have become so large, I never seem to know where to start giving, believe that my gift will be so insignificant or feel as though I don't ever see the practical/real results from what I've given... so I don't give.

I wrote a post on Tuesday -- You'll want to read it as it will give you context for this cause I'm featuring today...

The Liz Logelin Foundation is one of the most practical and yet powerful I've seen.

They help financially assist families who are dealing the death of a spouse, life-partner or parent as they struggle to move forward without their greatest love and support.
Simple. As. That.

I know that I have a lot of readers who are pregnant, new parents or even seasoned parents. If {God forbid} you or your spouse were to die suddenly... how would that affect you/them financially? Your baby{ies} would still need to be clothed, feed and have a roof over their heads, right?

This foundation helps make sure that happens.

They have an incredibly witty way of donating --

"$7 on the 7th"

It's $7 on the 7th day of each month
-- As stated on the site, "What's $7... a couple of Latte's?" 1 and 1/2 if you order my drink -- But $7 to a parent who's just lost their spouse could mean formula for their baby, diapers, a descent and comfortable crib sheet, a coat for winter... you know all the needs children have. $7 isn't much, but when we're all giving $7, it meets a MIGHTY need.

I gave my first $7 this past Tuesday -- Go here and give your first $7

Featured Friday: Weekly Blog Love

Short. Sweet. and to the point. I've got a busy day...

I am going to continue my Weekly Blog Love simply because I love doing it and a lot of you said you love finding new and interesting bloggers --

I have been following this incredible blogger for about 8 months or so... Her heart is so incredibly warm, sincere, sensitive and vulnerable. She has a story that is heart felt and honest. She is not only physically beautiful and a model, but she exudes beauty from the inside. She has a love for music, which you'll see displayed on her blog weekly and concerts are definitely a favorite past time for her.

With all this, she lives a life that not many people live and this part of her life is what she blogs about. Her stories from this exotic journey are intriguing, funny and addictive. While we've never spoken outside of our comments on each others blogs {which we rarely miss a-one}, I feel like I know her.

She is...

Thank you for your inspiring story and
always keeping me coming back for more!!!

Featured Friday: Shred Report and Other News

So who HASN'T heard of the shred?!

Oh, you? Um... ahem.

I'm here to tell you about it...

10 days ago I started a journey that I'm proud to say I haven't quit -- It's called:

Since I've been married, I've not only gained the "newlywed 9", but also the "30 y/o sag" - Awesome.

Lindsey... one of my Blog Loves, did the shred and gave us continuous updates -- She totally inspired me and even the though it took 13 days to get the stupid DVD regardless of the challenges, I started The Shred 10 days ago.

I'm happy to report:

#1 I'm not dead
#2 I'm not dead
#3 I'm still alive :)

OK... getting for real: My endurance is up, my body is feeling fit {whereas, I can't necessarily see a difference} and I have more energy already -- In fact, after days 1,2,3,4... I was d.r.e.a.d.i.n.g. working out and yet, yesterday I found myself excited about going home and working out no, I'm not crazy :)

Measurements which I cannot believe I'm displaying for the world to see are:

Day 1:
Height: 5' 3 1/2"
Weight: Does not interest me... it plays with my mind... I care about how my clothes fit :)
Waist: 31" Hips: 37" Thighs: 22.5

Day 10:
I'm happy to report my height remained the same - HA!

Waist: 30.5" Hips: 36.5 Thighs: 22

wow... that was embarrassing

I've always wished I had a smaller waist, but I have an "H" shaped body {
or 'athletic'} I had a 29 inch waist in 8th grade... but I am not complaining -- I must say I was shocked to see I'd lost 1/2 inch everywhere... I didn't really have any expectations, but I guess that's good seeing as I didn't get disappointed that I hadn't met them! {I do not always live by that philosophy, btw :}

30 Day Shred Grade so far? A+ !!

Next up? BLOGGY AWARDS!! I've received a few awards recently and I've been so bad about announcing them -- Sorry Ladies!!!

From Ms. Salti -- She thinks I'm adorable!

THANK YOU, MS. SALTI! You're adorable, too!! :)

This award is from Megsie and Erin -- Apparently I'm Lovely, too!

THANK YOU, LADIES!!!
{I have to say about Erin... She's such a great commenter!
Thanks for always making me smile ;0}

OK... Someone spank me with a wet noodle... I have NO idea who gave this to me and I've looked and looked through my comments! UGH! If it was you... Let me know and I'll update this! Clearly... I'm not as cute as you thought! SORRY :(

Thanks for thinkin' I'm cute!! :)

Last bit of business to take care of!!!

My Weekly Blog Love -- I don't seem to be getting much response to it! I adore a lot of blogs... but it doesn't seem to be too interesting to y'all and way down yonder here in NC, we like to keep things interesting!

So... what do you think?
Weekly Blog Love?

Featured Foto Friday and Blog Love

Saskia and I have been "Blog Friends" for a while... chatting back and forth, commenting when we can, enjoying each others' lives from across the ocean... She does live in London, after all -- I was totally siked when she asked me to Feature her Esty Store. Totally.

My love for travel drew me to Saskia's Blog. She is so explicit in sharing her incredible adventures with her husband all over London and a myriad of other intriguing traveling escapades. Coupled with this, she doesn't just tell her story, she shares her story through her fabulous photography. Dabbling in photography myself, I'm always in amazement of her artistic ability to capture the 'mood' of a moment, the history of an area, or the beauty of a scene within the creativity of her shots. Her pictures make me smile and I love anything that makes me smile.

When she recently told me that all her photos are taken in film and by her 1973 Minolta SRT-303 my mouth hit the floor. Incredible. Seeing as she lives in London, she is a London based photographer. To my absolute delight, she has now chosen to share her gift with us through her Etsy Shop she opened this past month. Right now, she has a few of her favorite pictures up for sale. She offers not only various sized prints, but also wonderful canvases and she is ready and waiting to fill custom orders for whoever is interested.
With no surprise, Saskia is off to Venice next week and without a doubt, she'll be glued to her camera. This undoubtedly means more fabulousness for us!

Saskia Photography

Saskia is my Weekly Blog Love -- After writing all that, I said to myself How could she NOT be my blog love... not only is she an amazing photographer, but I LOVE her blog!!!

GO - NOW - LOOK - BUY -

Featured Friday: Guest Blogger and Blog Love

I had a friend of mine IRL, Miss Bliss, that blogs with her husband, Mr. Wonderful -- I've known them both since, well... I was born -- She graciously asked if I wanted a guest blogger because I've been going crazy so darn busy! Of course I said yes! She's a professor at the University of Miami, a writer and a Newlywed! As women... I'm sure we can all relate to this post! Enjoy!!

Hi, lovely girls,
This post comes to you from Miami Beach, Florida, my on and off home. Reflecting on what I worried about or dreamed about at different ages lead to the following age summaries:

Age 0-10: try to be good so you don’t get in trouble, who are these strange people who are staying at my house? Why are the church people so good at happy faces there but so mean at home? Swim with friend one day and feel the best day of my childhood. At age ten, I go with my pregnant-with-twins- but-thinks-it’s- one- baby-mom and my five-year-old sister to the airport. My mom has our birth certificates and report cards in her purse. We have our favorite dolls. We fly one-way under assumed names from Philadelphia to Cincinnati and I experience culture shock in my own country.

Age 11-13: food stamps and WIC and United Way and private education loans and grants and my grandmother helped sustain my (now) three! sisters and my mom and I; my mom was now the sole source of income and provider for us all… she went to an intensive 2 year program to be able to work a job with the highest salary and quickest graduation to be able to support us. Madonna and Michael Jackson are just entering the scene and breakdancing is big and girls just wanna have fun. Help raise my sisters.

14-18: Mom rebounds. Marries older man. From Russia. This is how I start ninth grade. Ninth grade is hard enough for anyone. I had a new stepdad who is 20 years older than my mom, who I am helping learn English vocabulary. I enter a new school. Again. This one is nicer and richer than my previous school. The kids have known each other since birth. I wish I had nicer clothes. I wish I were prettier. The weekend before tenth grade starts, I have one new shirt from the mall in my nearly empty closet. My visiting step-sister’s luggage does not arrive, and she wears it first. Tenth grade: mom leaves the guy. Change high schools. Change right back. 11th and 12th grade: the teachers and guidance counselors at this amazing high school prepare me to apply to college and ace my SATs. (at least the verbal!) I fall in love with a guy who my mom thinks is the wrong color. I secretly see him anyway, and we never do what she was so worried about.

Age 18-23: Mom remarries again right before I start college. My shit is in garage of their new house before she drops me off at my college dorm room. I never have my own room at their new house, where my sisters and mom and her new husband now live. I never have anywhere to put my clothes when I come visit, either. My college professors suggest things to me like, “when you work on your Master’s degree, and you could do your Ph.D…” concepts I’ve never heard of… Leave college in the middle of a semester one day with my best friend and we drive her Miata from Cincinnati to DC, and move in with her parents. Return to school when I am ready. Spend a lot of time feeling very sad, and looking for love and mistakenly thinking sex creates and guarantees love.

Age 24-33: Apply to grad schools if they have an ocean nearby. Move to Miami for school, knowing nothing about Miami and never having been there until deciding to go to school there. Succeed on paper, in resume format. Date the wrong guy—a walking temper. Waste a lot of time breaking up with him and giving him “one more chance.” Finally understand it is nice to have a weekend off work without fighting the whole time. Knowing nothing about financial management, proceed to screw my finances up completely. Begin Ph.D. Leave that program and then teach at University of Miami. Head to work and laugh that I am in charge of a college course. Spend some years here locked in anxiety and one day while teaching at UM, realize I am free to enjoy the rest of my life. Teach at a high school for two years and wonder how in the hell high school teachers survive their administrations and boards of education and some parents. The students were great. Return to teaching college. Begin deciding to dream and create and enjoy every day of my life. I do wonder why my family does not call each other to ask: how was your day? And really really listen, just to ask and to listen. The idea of sisters who talk on the phone daily always appeals to me. Even briefly--- but—life is busy, I know. It’s busy and then over.

Age 33-35: Have stupid crush on guy at work. Later realize I only had a crush on him and thought he was funny because I was that sad when that feeling started. Realized he is not that funny. When I feel better, I marry the love of my life, the boy I swam with on the best day of my childhood. Live in Boulder, CO and cry for six months straight because I am so well loved and it is better than I could have dreamed. Move back to Miami Beach, with him, to return to job teaching at UM, and for him to go back to school. Our future is starting now, with the ocean swirling right next to us

THANK YOU, MISS BLISS!!!

For now.... My Weekly Blog Love!

Katie over at A Hokie and a Wahoo

First and foremost, she lives in one of my favorite cities in America! Philadelphia!! Secondly, she's incredibly down to earth and a hoot! She loves her family, her husband and her posts are always full of life to either cheer me up or make me think. Katie is in the Event Planning industry and so her sense of fashion is really fun :)
She is a Hokie and proud of it! Virginia Tech {let's keep them in our hearts this week... 2nd anniversary of the shooting massacre was on the 16th} was her school of choice after seeing the campus only once! She has recently shared some of her experiences there and only made me understand and feel more connected to her. Her husband, however, is a Wahoo, which is University of Virgina {VT's rival!} -- It makes me smile to read about the 'fun' rivalry going on in their home and yet, I love even more reading about their sincere love and care for each other...

So... here's to you, Katie! Have a great weekend everyone!

TRUE STORY

Jennifer and Jim kept getting huge water bills. They knew beyond a doubtthat the bills weren't representative of their actual usage, and no matterhow they tried to conserve, the high bills continue. Although they could seenothing wrong, they had everything checked for leaks or problems; first thewater meter, then outdoor pipes, indoor pipes, underground pipes, faucets, toilets, washer, ice maker, etc., all to no avail. One day Jim was sick and stayed home in bed, but kept hearing water runningdownstairs. He finally tore himself from his sick bed & went toinvestigate, and stumbled onto the cause of such high water bills.Apparently this was happening all day long when they were not at home.Knowing that few would believe him he taped a segment of the "problem" for posterity.

Now you can open the attachment & watch the video.

Featured Friday: Doula For Your Darling

Hello Bloggers! Anna has graciously chosen me to be part of her Feature Fridays, and I'm excited about sharing my Birth Doula business with you (What is a doula, you say? If you haven't heard of it, you're not alone. I'll explain.) But first I just want to comment on what a great community Anna has become part of. I love what she has done with her blog, and I love reading the interactions among all of her followers. Isn't it great that we as women can connect in a very personal way even if we never meet?!

Let me introduce myself. My name is Eva Casillas, and I am Anna's sister (she's all grown up now, sniff). I've been married almost 12 years and we have four children between the ages of six and ten (two boys, two girls). I got my undergrad in Family and Consumer Sciences from Liberty University in 1997. After that I worked in a Child Development Center for about five years (in between having babies :D ). That was a great way for me to use my education, both in teaching and in management, and to minimize the time spent away from my children. But when my youngest was finally in Pre-K, I was ready to leave the preschool world and I wondered what to do with my life. I thought of many options for a career, but couldn't decide on one that sounded very interesting, so I went back to school. I started master's level courses through Liberty's online degree program in Counseling, but I wasn't sure if I really wanted to be a counselor. I just knew that I wanted to help families somehow. After my second semester of counseling classes, it hit me. I wanted to work with new moms and their babies. I had a close friend who has been a doula (pronounced doo-la) for many years, but I had never really considered that option for myself. Once I started looking into the details of this unique career, I knew it was a perfect fit for me.

So what is a doula? Simply put, it is a woman who is well educated in the complex area of childbirth and trained in methods to provide emotional support and pain management (for those brave souls who choose to go without an epidural). She is not a medical professional or midwife. For those of you who have gone through pregnancy, you might think of it as having your childbirth instructor in the delivery room with you. She has all the knowledge that you want to remember, but you'll most likely forget, during the stress of childbirth.

Having a baby is an event that women tend to remember (in detail) for the rest of their lives. Studies have shown that a woman's self-esteem is strongly influenced by her birth experience. Women who had a positive experience and came away feeling proud of themselves, had an increase in self esteem. Many felt that since they could make it through labor, then they could handle anything else life throws at them. But women who felt as if they had failed somehow during the delivery, had a sense of lower self-esteem even twenty years later. This sense of failure seems to stem from negative comments from either family members or hospital staff or it may come from a lack of support altogether. A doula is well aware of all the emotional aspects of labor and delivery, and her only job is to focus on you and make sure you are nurtured and cared for.

Since I finished my training last June, I have attended three births. The first was an induction for a young mom at 41 weeks gestation (this was her second baby) which went quickly (about four hours). The mom got an epidural, but it didn't completely work. The hospital staff ended up giving her a double dose of medication on accident. So when the baby was born, he was basically drugged. But after a little bit of special attention from the neo-natal nurses, he was fine.

My second client was a woman who was attempting a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean). She had a long early labor, so it was difficult to know when to go to the hospital. She was sent home twice because her contractions were not regular or strong enough. Then she went to her 39 week check-up and the doctor noticed some bleeding. He admitted her to the hospital to find out what was happening. Apparently, she had a rare condition in which her placenta was detaching before the baby was born. This mom was given the choice to continue to labor on her own and see if she could progress naturally (as long as the bleeding did not worsen), or to have a c-section. She chose to labor naturally for two hours and then re-assess the situation. After that time, she still had not dilated past one centimeter, so she agreed to a c-section. The baby boy was beautiful, and mom was happy with her own efforts.

My third client just delivered this past Sunday. She is a 42 year old mom with a unique story. She had seven children in her first marriage when she was younger. Her kids are now between the ages of 25 and 16. But about ten years ago she remarried and they decided to have a baby together. This time around, it was not so easy to get pregnant. She had three miscarriages before she was able to carry a baby to term. In December of 07 she delivered a baby girl, but at 4 months the baby died of SIDS. This poor mom and dad were heart broken, and they struggled with whether or not to try again. They decided to pray and leave it up to God. Apparently God had mercy on them, and she got pregnant again quickly and was able to carry the baby to term. Sunday she gave birth to a beautiful baby girl named Laila.

As you can see, each labor and delivery is so different. And each family has their own unique situation to deal with. My desire is to be like a short-term counselor to help each family through this major life-change. It takes a lot of patience and the ability to develop an intimate relationship with a complete stranger in a short amount of time. It is challenging, but so rewarding. In the end I get to witness one of life's greatest miracles.

Featured Friday: Family Funnies and Gladys Hardy

If you hadn't guessed, this is my family (mom was taking the picture)
This picture makes me laugh every time for a few reasons:
  • You'd think we lived in Michigan the way we're dressed -- This was taken in West Palm Beach, FL
  • My sister, Sarah, looks like a Mrs. Conehead from that movie... um, yeah -- you know the one
  • My brother, Matt, looks like he's going to punch someone for making him look like a stuffed potato
  • My sister, Eva, has the ever pleasant smile of a child model
  • I.... well, I don't know what I'm doing, but I was happy
  • Clearly my brother, Mike is getting a kick out of it
  • My dad looks like he may be praying silently to God that he survive the next 15 years until we're all out of the house :)
I just love that picture of my family and wanted to share :)

Next Up!

Featured Friday: Hakon's Home

Since I started blogging, I've met the most amazing women with some pretty incredible stories about having children. Those who have chosen not to be parents, those who are having babies left and right now, those who are waiting to have a baby and those who are fighting with everything in their being to be parents.

I have a lot of friends who've started a family in the last three years and I love their children. Sometimes my heart aches for those who will seemingly be the best parents a child could ask for, yet they haven't been able to conceive. At this point, I'm happy to say Always an Aunt, never a Mother, but realize the day might come when I feel differently and what if I'm one who isn't able to conceive naturally.

While there are many options for couples who want children {natural conception, in-vitro fertilization, sergeant mother}, today's Featured Friday is about a couple who's choice was adoption. Their blog is Hakon's Home (pronounced Hawkon) and their story, like many other adoptive parents, is emotional, touching and life changing. Hakon is truly the joy of their hearts.

Often times a couple's choice to have a child starts in the heart, Hakon's mom says this:

“Our road to adoption began long ago. Before we met, the desire to adopt was growing in each of us. We never considered financial obstacles a good enough reason to prevent offering our home to a child. We have moved forward in faith that God will provide as He sees fit….”

I imagine any couple wanting to be parents tries to be prepared on every level, yet as I've heard from mom's and dad's everywhere, No one will ever get to the point where everything in your life is perfectly lined up for you to have a child -- What this says to me is when God puts in you the desire to have a child, you do all you can to prepare yourselves on practical levels, but what's left is faith that God will provide the rest. Hakon's parents are doing just that.

The story of Hakon's adoption is best told through their blog... I won't try to replicate it -- If you and your spouse are struggling to be parents, if you simply need some inspiration today or if you're desire has always been to be an adoptive parent and would like to read another's journey... Go read their story. I promise, you will not be disappointed.

Featured Friday Wednesday! {and a giveaway ;-}

Spring time is one of the best times of year for a fresh, new and exciting change in your home. With our economy on seriously shaky ground, it might be difficult to buy new furniture, bedding or remodel the kitchen to get the feeling of 'new' -- This is where my sister-in-law {aka, SIL} can help...

She called me about 4 months ago and said Check your email, look what I made! -- I did and was totally blown away... I called her right back and asked So when are you going to start selling them? She was really taken aback and explained that the idea stemmed from having seen one at her favorite store and then she saw the price tag and thought "I can make my own for way less" -- Once made, she realized by simply changing this one feature in her home, she'd created a whole new feel... so she made one for every room of her house --

What? You ask is this one incredibly simple, inexpensive, but couture way of changing the entire look of your home? Lampshades. Yeah, I know. I really didn't fully believe her, either, until she made one for my office and then one for D and my home and it did. Having a blog, it was the only avenue I knew to get her started... having 3 children, she didn't have the time to figure out how to build a blog, so I stepped and did it -- 3 days later, we had a blog -- I wrote her first post and helped her launch by doing a giveaway --

Within a couple months she started getting some custom orders and really felt like she could make a business out of it -- She came across Etsy and learned the ins and outs of it, made 30 lampshades and launched -- Within a couple weeks she had more orders and could hardly contain herself that people were really wanting what she had to offer {of course I wasn't surprised, but isn't that just how it goes?} In the mean time, she came across a local art shop that sells "All things locally made" by local artists how many times can you say local in one sentence? -- She dropped in and took a chance by asking if they might be interested in showing her lampshades... The owner immediately looked at her blog/Etsy store and asked When can you come back and set up shop!? Of course Tory flipped out and that next weekend, she and her husband took their date night and set up all her shades --

I thought that took the cake until she called me yesterday and announced A Boutique Hotel in California saw my Etsy store and want 30 custom lampshades! I almost lost it {if you haven't gathered by now, I really give into my emotions} -- The thrill of having watched my SIL simply want to change the look of her home using a limited budget, to becoming a full-blown business woman, doing what she loves and making money doing it... I. love. it. more than I can express on this blog -- Here are a few things she says about lampshades:

  • Lampshades are a way to completely change the look of a room for very little money
  • Can't figure out what color to paint your walls? buy a lampshade and let the colors from the fabric inspire you.
  • Afraid of color? A lampshade is a subtle and beautiful way to add color
  • Love color? Perfect... add more with a lampshade
  • Who wants to be like everybody else? Buy a lampshade that nobody else has. You can't buy these at Target :-) I have never made the same lampshade twice
  • I have made over 65 shades now and am a mom of a 4 year old, 2 1/2 year old, and 9 month old, God is good that they all still nap
  • You can buy already made lampshades at my Etsy Store
  • You can order custom made lampshades through my blog, Shade That Lamp
IF YOU LIVE IN JACKSONVILLE, FL: Works of Art, where Tory will be selling her Lampshades, is having their Grand Opening this Saturday at 7999 Philips Hwy, Suite 100 Jacksonville, FL -- She would LOVE to meet you and help you recreate your home using lampshades -- This is non-for-profit organization, selling hand-crafted items made by local artisans

Tory said to me I'm realizing dreams really can come true. Thank you for encouraging me to start my blog and sell my lampshades. Now I have an Etsy shop, I'm selling them in our local Art Shop and I'm getting orders from hotels!

I've said it before and I'll say it a thousand times... there's no greater joy I have than seeing that someone has a dream, encouraging that dream in any way I can and watching it really come to life. Love it.

Now... for a giveaway -- Tory is giving away one 6x6x7 drum shade -- YOU describe the room and she'll pick the fabric -- Drum shades are perfect for any floor lamp or hanging lamp {like above your dining table} -- Here are a few examples of drum shades she's made {and some sold} already --

Rules:
  • Comment, one entry
  • Comment and follow TORY, two entries
  • Comment, follow Tory and post about the giveaway, 3 entries
Giveaway will be closed SUNDAY AT MIDNIGHT and winner will be announced Monday!

P.S. Just as you may have figured because sometimes I'm so d#@*! fickle, a new name came to me this morning in the shower {where all inspiration flows... hee hee} -- It will officially be called "Featured Friday" because, well, I'm featuring a new blogger's dream every Friday! So there.
